Jimmy Gopperth’s stand-out season for Wasps was recognised at Wasps’ 2017 Awards at the Ricoh Arena last night, as he won both Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Season.
The Aviva Premiership’s top points’ scorer this season was the runaway winner of votes cast by Wasps’ supporters and also got his teammates’ vote, thanks to the huge impact he has made this season during Wasps’ climb to the top of the table.
Speaking about his double, Gopperth, who is also nominated for RPA Players’ Player of the Year on Wednesday night, said: “I am absolutely blown away by these awards. I’m humbled and very honoured to pick up both of these tonight.
“I’m really thankful to the supporters for voting for me, I can only do what I do because of the way the team has played this year and most of the credit has to go to them. We’ve got such brilliant support and I think you can see that just in the numbers we’ve been getting to games this season. Since the move up, the way everyone has welcomed us has been brilliant and the way long-standing fans have continued to support us, travelling big distances, has been amazing, so we’ve got a lot to thank them for. We love playing in front of those crowds, when the Ricoh is rocking, and we’ve really enjoyed our rugby which is when we play at our best.”
“To also be given an award voted for by the other boys, I’m just so grateful. I’ve got so much respect for every one of my team mates, when I go out there I just enjoy playing alongside them. When you play with you mates everyday you form a lasting bond and to be given this award by them is really humbling. As I said earlier, individuals can only play well because of the work the rest of the team puts in and I’m absolutely loving it. We’re very blessed to be able to play the game we love and I’ve enjoyed every minute of this season.”
Back row Thomas Young, who was also nominated for Players’ Player, was awarded ‘Young Player of the Season after a week to remember, being named Man of the Match after his hat-trick against Saracens and selected in Wales’ squad to tour New Zealand this summer.
Academy Player of the Season went to Jacob Umaga who has impressed during Academy and Anglo-Welsh Cup performances during his first season with Wasps.
